ISLAMABAD – June 16, 2025:
Fuel prices in Pakistan have gone up once again, with the federal government announcing a notable increase in the rates of both petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD).
According to an official statement released by the Finance Division late Sunday night, the latest revision in prices comes after recommendations from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and coordination with other relevant departments.
New Prices Effective from June 16
Starting from today:
-
Petrol will now cost Rs258.43 per litre, up from Rs253.63 — an increase of Rs4.80
-
High-Speed Diesel (HSD) will be available at Rs262.59 per litre, rising from Rs254.64 — an increase of Rs7.95
This adjustment in fuel pricing reflects the ongoing changes in the global oil market and local taxation structures.
Background: Higher International Prices and Fiscal Commitments
Prior to this official hike, industry forecasts had already indicated a slight rise in fuel prices for the second half of June. Early estimates suggested an increase of around Re1 per litre for petrol and Rs5 per litre for diesel, based on international pricing trends.
A key factor behind this latest surge is Pakistan’s ongoing financial alignment with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). As part of fiscal reforms:
-
A petroleum levy of Rs77 per litre is now in place
-
A carbon levy of Rs5 per litre on furnace oil, and Rs2.5 per litre on both petrol and diesel, will be enforced starting July 1
These levies are part of a broader effort to increase revenue without increasing the base price of fuel excessively.
Economic Impact and Public Reaction
The price hike is expected to affect both transportation costs and inflation across key sectors such as agriculture, logistics, and consumer goods. Diesel, in particular, plays a major role in heavy transport and freight services, meaning cost increases will likely be passed down to consumers.
While the government emphasizes its commitment to fiscal discipline and economic reform, many citizens are already feeling the pressure of rising living costs.
